Oscar Winning Looks

And the award for best dressed goes to…

The 97th Oscars has come and gone, but there are some outfits I will never stop thinking about. From bedazzled gowns to reimagined suits, there was so much to love. As fashion student who takes these events seriously, it was so hard to narrow the list down to 10. Unlike the Met Gala, there is no specific theme besides glitz and glam so it really isn’t hard to get it right. Here are my top ten looks from this years Oscars red carpet:

1. Ariana Grande - Schiaparelli

This just might be my favourite look of the night, and that was a very hard decision to make. Grande in a Schiaparelli ballgown, crafted to perfection with the right balance of whimsical charm and artistic sculpting…what’s not to love? This would be the type of dress I would design for princesses as a child and would love to wear this day. She truly had her Cinderella moment.

2. Cynthia Erivo - Vivienne Westwood

You see, this is why it is so hard to pick a favourite. Social media’s favourite duo did not disappoint with the vocals and definitely not with their outfits. This quite literal wedding dress has earned a special place on my Pinterest board because of its beautiful placement of delicate flowers contrasted with the bold, draped silhouette. Top 3 look!

3. Ariana Grande - Schiaparelli

Where do we start? The colour, no the silhouette, no the SHOE AT THE BACK?! There is so much going on, yet it is done so intentionally. The slightly raised hem adds dimension to this ballgown to show of the ruby red shoes that you can see not just on her feet, but also as an accessory on the back of her dress. Ariana was giving a performance of a lifetime and Schiaparelli was the perfect match.

4. Lisa - Markgong

If you know me, you know I love a good blazer and suit. Lisa wore a deconstructed blazer by Markgong that was sleek, sophisticated and tailored to perfection. I would like to see this look in James Bond movie because looks like this need to be seen again!

5. Demi Moore - Giorgio Armani Privé

The oscars are truly a time for glitz and glam and Demi went all out. This Giorgio Armani fitted mermaid dress with a draped drop waist looks like an award itself. You think Oscars, you think glamour, shine, elegance - she gave us that and more.

6. Selena Gomez - Ralph Lauren

There is something about this that reminds me of the Marilyn Monroe, “Happy Birthday Mr President” dress in the best way possible. What I love is that it is nude but not sheer and covered in crystals resembling water droplets for the ultimate look of elegance. This neckline is really her best friend and I love when she pairs it with a dainty necklace and wavy bob.

7. Raye - Viviene Westwood

Oscar winning tears…or Oscar winning dress?! Give me red, a cowl neckline, draping, then make it Vivienne Westwood and I am sold. This is such an old Hollywood look that if you show it to me in black and white, I’d believe it was. Raye is absolutely stunning in this gown and that bright smile is all the evidence I need to know she felt a million dollars in this outfit.

8. Elle Fanning - Givenchy

Give me Givenchy! Now I rarely like dresses that have a contrasting bow belt, but I must give credit where credit is due. The dress alone could make any 2025 bride happy with the delicate lace and boxy sweetheart neckline. While the bow reminds me of the Vera Wang dress in Bride Wars. Am I sensing a theme here? Are bridal dresses the new go-to for occasion wear?

9. Lupita N’yongo - Chanel

Any Barbie fans here? I don’t know what it is about this dress that looks like it is straight out of Barbie Fashion Fairytale. Perhaps it’s the layering of the bedazzled corset with the pink lace bow that screams Barbie in her designer era. The main body of the dress seems to have a very faded pink tinge with a beautifully pleated skirt. When in motion, oh darling isn’t it devine. Get your sparkle on Lupita!

10. HER - Ralph Lauren

This is so Bratz coded and you cannot convince me otherwise. Bratz and LOL dolls (Yes, I watch it occasionally). Metallic greenish gold is so Y2K so to put that for an oscars gown is making many 2000s babies happy. But it doesn’t stop there, the chunky belt with wide buckle takes this princess gown and adds some modern day edge. I'm telling you, belts are the accessory of this season, you heard it here first.

There we have it, my top 10 looks for last night’s Oscars. There were so many looks that I was in love with that didn’t make it on this list such as Scarlett Johansson’s navy, velvet ensemble. And yes, Ariana does deserve two separate mentions because Schiaparelli did their thing! Make sure to subscribe for more fashion tea that is brewing fresh everyday…
