Expanding Your Mind and Owning Your Path
Notes from Vanessa Kingori on Ladies who launch
Ladies who launch is a video podcast hosted by Rochelle Humes. She interviews leading ladies in a range of careers and today’s focus is on her talk with Vanessa Kingori, Google's Managing Director of Technology, Media, and Telecoms and former Chief Business Officer at Conde Nast. I learnt SO MUCH from this podcast, these are only the highlights.
“A big part of leadership is the observing”
“I’m not a leader in every facet of my life”
Race and gender wasn’t the biggest things for her, it was more age and class that was a barrier that she overcame
“I don’t want to be professionally black” doesn’t take on roles just because they need someone to represent the black role, she takes roles that has a job description that suits her
You can spot false confidence when you observe and listen - false confidence is usually more challenging and confrontational
She couldn’t get an assistant so she had interns brought in from LCF who had the passion but no access or money and now they are still working in big leading roles because of that
“If you’re gonna have fear, have it rooted in experience” don’t be scared of tech
It’s easy to open the doors for girls girls because you know they’re not going to hold the baton for long and pass it back
“You have to be expanding your neuropathways all the time, otherwise you’re degrading”
If you spend too much time in your comfort zone, you are actually aging
When launching something, you have to be 95% sure, believe in yourself so much that you can silence the doubters, but also hold 5% for doubt to make sure you are checking it’s the best it could be
“I don’t feel that I have the right to be complacent”
“I am a really good facilitator of creators” she can see other people’s vision and how to make it better
A super power she would like is to see people fears clearly
I always try to make notes when listening to a podcast to make sure I am actively listening and can go back to my notes and reflect on them. These notes are parts of the talk that resonated with me most, make sure to watch the full thing and subscribe to this blog for more articles daily.
