I literally just came from a webinar with Dior Bediako, certified life coach and speaker about goal setting for the impossible until it becomes possible. It was a very timely discussion and I didn’t just make notes, I am ready to take action. All these notes are straight from Dior’s talk, some slightly modified. This tea is to share:
Factors that might be holding you back from your goals:
Lack of clarity- you need to do something but it’s not clear so you end up doing nothing
Fear of failure - you don’t want to get it wrong so you don’t give yourself the chance to get it right
Procrastination - it is like you are buffering e.g.:
You might have an uni assignment to do, but you also have laundry to do
The assignment is hard, the laundry is easy so you will distract yourself with the laundry because it makes you feel better that you accomplished something
While the uni assignment is hard and takes a longer time and you don’t think you can do it
You end up overriding the negative feeling associated with the uni assignment with a positive feeling of doing laundry
The issue is, the positive feeling is only temporary
Overwhelmed by the magnitude of a task
Lack of accountability - blaming everything and everyone else
External factors - other major events beyond your control
Self doubt - negative self talk that downplays your capability
Lack of resources - physical and tangible limitations
Unrealistic expectations - putting so much on effort on Monday then being exhausted for the rest of the week
Impossible Goals Discussion Notes:
My impossible is possible
Forget about the shiny object syndrome that focuses on the end product
Focus on the journey
You might look like you are overachieving to others, but the things you accomplish might not be your actual impossible goals
There is so much she achieved but she wasn’t making money - making money was her actual impossible goal
She was undervaluing what she was offering (her coaching memberships) because she didn’t truly believe in the value of it
She had a brand called “rich and connected” but looking back it was a performance because even though she was connected, she didn’t truly believe she was rich
Setting riches as her priority ended up being a limiting belief because it made her have the wrong goal
Future self concept
Don’t create based on your past because that is where your limits live
Imagine what it would feel like to truly believe that your impossible was possible
Work backwards from success
Think of every problem as a question because if you know you are successful in the future then you will have overcome the issue, figure out how to do this
Have a future self goal
Perfect plan vs realistic plan with future self - Have grace daily
Start with your future self - write everything about your future self
I am the most important part of this process, a long as I am growing day by day, I’m good
A vision and a goal is different and both necessary
A vision is like a day in the life - it is continuous
A goal is the (best) day of your life - the day you achieve it and the moment is highlighted
What do your goals mean - be as clear as possible
Don’t just say you want to be recognised for your work - Say you want to be listed in Forbes 30 under 30
Have you done research on how this vision can come to life?
Don’t spend the whole time researching - make time to research, then act
Your research should make the path to your goal as simple and clear as possible
Do I know the very next steps to take?
Personal action: After this, I have now decided to do a minute of meditation every morning and night visualising my “impossible goals” until they have become possible. That minute of mediation can look like journaling, voice recording, making a video or sitting in silence with my eyes closed.
I am not letting this tea brew, I am drinking it straight from the pot before the leaves set and become bitter. It’s go time. Subscribe for more blog posts!
